True Love is Rare but Friendship is Rarer: “My Amanda” On Netflix

My Amanda is a 2021 Philippine Film directed and written by Alessandra de Rossi and produced under Spring Films and AWOO. The movie starring Alessandra de Rossi as Amanda and Piolo Pascual as TJ. It was premiered on July 15 globally on Netflix.

The film revolves around the deeply platonic friendship of TJ and Amanda are unusually close friends and are often mistaken as a couple and as they go through the ups and downs in life.

TJ and Amanda seem to be a real couple without sexual attraction. They have a better relationship than real lovers. My Amanda is the ultimate friend zone movie. TJ is completely straight he is implied to be a serial dater who can’t seem to find the perfect girl but has zero attraction to her friend Amanda.

Being in love doesn’t mean having those feelings that lead to physical attachments. Because Love can be complicated, existing over years of friendship, but somehow remaining platonic. Best friends that are flagrantly made for each other, yet for whatever reason, but never led to the path of a relationship.

Their friendship progresses as they bond with each other at different stages of their adult lives. They chill with ease, they flirt and continuously find time for each other like what a real couple did. My Amanda cleverly has both characters acting differently; Amanda shows love for her best friend TJ using actions and words, while TJ just shows fewer signs and uses humor to get through moments of “what if?” However, TJ narrates the film, and he describes his love for Amanda throughout.

My Amanda is a reminder for all of us to appreciate and see what’s in front of us because many of us have the inability to see what’s already in front of us. I’ve certainly been in that situation myself where I had with someone who I had madly fallen in love with, and only to know that he was in love with me as well at the wrong time. Life is having a funny old way of presenting situations to people, and you know that it’s love when all you want is that person to be happy, even if you’re not the reason and part of their happiness and My Amanda is a reminder of that.

A friendly reminder for everyone that if you love someone, tell them. Forget about the fear of looking ridiculous. You know what is truly ridiculous is passing up on an opportunity to tell someone about your feelings on him/her. It’s better to lose your pride with someone you love rather than to lose that someone you love with your useless pride or ego.
