To Boost His Fame, the “Empire” Actor, Jussie Smollet, Found Guilty After the Hoax Attack

Chicago – The Cook County Circuit Court jury has found actor, the one-time star of the TV drama Empire, Jussie Smollett guilty after ten hours of deliberation for filing a false police report – a hate crime against himself that happened in January 2019. As the prosecutors said it was just to boost his popularity and gain sympathy.

The actor claimed that he was attacked by two masked strangers at night on a dark Chicago street. They called him racist and homophobic slurs, doused him with an unknown liquid, and placed a noose around his neck.

The police said to arrange the hoax attack he had paid two brothers for US$3500, in order to raise his profile in show-business. They arrested Jussie Smollett a month after the alleged assault. On Friday the jury found him guilty of 5/6 felony conduct counts he faced with each count carrying a maximum to three years in prison.

Dan Webb, a special prosecutor, said that his hoax attack is ridiculous, “Mr Smollett would not have lost this case as he did today unless the jury found that he lied to them.”

Judges James Lin scheduled a pre-sentencing hearing for January 27.

Eryk Wachnik, a former Cook County Prosecutor explained to Reuters, “While it’s certainly possible that he could receive a sentence involving prison time, the much more likely scenario is that he would receive probation with some amount of community service.”

The two brothers who Smollet hired, Abimbola and Olabinjo Osundairo, in the trial admitted that the actor paid them to attack him and he even instructed them how to do it.

However, the doctor who treated Smollet after the attack happened told the jury that the injuries that the actor had were real.

A special prosecutor was assigned to examine the case in June 2019. The special prosecutor asked to charge Smollet, and a grand jury returned a six-count felony, after a five-month investigation.

This hoax attack that he staged has caused him to lose his role as a singer-songwriter in the final season of Empire and his acting career got “cancelled”.
