Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the United States Wendy Sherman has spoken by telephone with the Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi regarding Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
In a statement by the spokesman for the US Department of State (Department of Foreign Affairs), Ned Price as conveyed in a press release at the US Embassy in Jakarta, Thursday (3/3/2022), was stated that in the telephone conversation, Deputy Foreign Minister Sherman condemned the planned Russian attack, unwarranted, and unjustified against Ukraine.
The US Deputy Foreign Minister also expressed gratitude to the Indonesian government for co-sponsoring the UN General Assembly resolution on Ukraine.
The importance of the US-Indonesia Strategic Partnership was also emphasized by Deputy Foreign Minister Sherman and Foreign Minister Retno, who addressed how to assure the success of the US-ASEAN Special Summit in Washington, D.C.
Indonesia along with 140 other countries agreed to a United Nations (UN) resolution asking Russia to stop its attacks on Ukraine.
Voting was taken at the United Nations General Assembly Session for an Emergency Special Session, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, the United States, Wednesday (2/3) local time. The session was chaired by UN General Assembly President Abdulla Shahid.
As reported by AFP, Thursday (3/3/2022), the resolution also condemns the policy of Vladimir Putin as President of Russia to deploy its nuclear forces in a standby position.
The voting process was streamed live on the UN YouTube channel. Abdulla Shahid, President of the United Nations General Assembly, presided over the meeting. Ukraine’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Sergiy Kyslytsya, stood and applauded, while Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Vasiliy Nebenzia, remained with a mask down to her lips.
