The presence of Omicron B.1.1.529 variant indicating another COVID wave

The new variant of the coronavirus B.1.1.529 or Omicron which was first detected in South Africa is now a new threat to many countries.

The variant is feared to worsen the Covid-19 pandemic situation again because of its dangerous mutation compared Delta variant. The World Health Organization (WHO) found that the Omicron variant increased the probability of re-infection with Covid-19 when compared to other variants. Therefore, WHO recommends all countries to take mitigation measures against the emergence of Omicron variants. Worse, this latest variant of Covid has been detected in a number of countries around the world.

The Dutch health authorities reported that 61 people who arrived in Amsterdam on two flights from South Africa had tested positive for Covid-19. They have been placed in isolation at a hotel near Schiphol Airport. The 61 people were among about 600 passengers detained for several hours at the airport after arrival to be tested for the virus. Dutch health authorities said the Omicron variant was likely found in a number of people who tested positive.

Several countries reporting on Omicron B.1.1.529 variant

Based on Kompas.com report on Sunday 28th November 2021, England announced two cases of Covid-19 infection associated with the Omicron variant. Britain’s Health Minister Sajid Javid said the two cases were linked to a trip to South Africa. Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that arrivals from abroad would be tightened to prevent the spread of the Omicron variant from spreading further.

In Germany, the Ministry of Health in the state of Bavaria, confirmed two cases of Covid-19 infection associated with the Omicron variant. Both cases entered Germany at Munich Airport on November 24th 2021, before the country designated South Africa as the virus variant area. Both cases are currently in isolation. However, the Bavarian Ministry of Health did not explicitly mention that the two cases had traveled from South Africa.

Israel, Belgium, and Italy also have reported the first case of Omicron variant itself that came from passengers from Africa.
