The Language of Roses

Floriography, or the language of flowers, is a means of communication through or arrangement of flowers. Meaning has been attributed to flowers for thousands of years, and floriography has also been around almost as long; it has been practiced in traditional cultures on multiple continents. Interest in floriography flourished in Victorian England in particular; flowers were used in multiple ways to send coded messages, allowing people to express feelings that could not be spoken aloud.

There are many different flowers with many different meanings; since Valentine’s Day is coming up, I have chosen to focus on one of the most enduring and romantic blooms out there- roses.

White

White roses represent purity and grave; they also symbolize young love and eternal loyalty, making them a popular wedding flower. The color white can also represent fresh beginnings and a pure, clear path. White can also represent innocence, secrecy, and silence. White rosebuds represent girlhood.

Peach

Peach roses represent gratitude; they can also represent loyalty, sincerity, and genuineness of your feelings. Peach roses are also commonly used to celebrate work-related news. Pale peach roses are used to represent modesty.

Yellow

Yellow roses stand for warmth and happiness as well as friendship or devotion; it is commonly known as a “friendship flower”

Orange

Orange roses stand for enthusiasm as energy as well as admiration and fascination; they are a great motivational flower

Purple

One of the rarest colors of roses, they symbolize enchantment and love at first sight; this includes lavender roses.

Blue

Non-existent in nature and hard to create and attain, blue roses stand for mystery and unattainability as well as unrequited love

Green

Green roses represent nature, rejuvenation, and fertility, as well as stability and balance; they can be sent to express hope in times of struggle.

Pink

Pink roses convey gratitude, admiration, femininity, and elegance; they are an ideal gift for the people you appreciate most, as well as for engagement parties, proms, and baby showers.

Red

This is the rose that most of the world is familiar with; its overall meaning is understood to be love and passion. A deep red rose can convey readiness for commitment as well as a deeper bond; lighter red roses are said to symbolizing passion and desire; red and white roses represent unity.
