Texas School Shooting: President Biden to Challenge the Gun Lobby

On Tuesday, 18-year-old, Salvador Ramos embarked on a 45-minute shooting rampage at Robb Elementary School. Before carrying out the shoot at the school, Ramos shot his grandmother and fled from the site in a battered truck carrying guns and ammunition. He drove across town erratically and eventually crashed his car into a ditch near the school.

It was at 11:32 local time when Ramos forced his way into a fourth-grade class and he opened fire, stated the Texas Department of Public Safety spokesperson Chris Olivarez to CNN. 21 people in total

As police arrived, Ramos barricaded himself in the classroom and prepared for a showdown with law enforcement officials. During the cross fire two officers were injured, Travis Considine However, the massacre ended after a Border patrol officer breached the classroom and shot Ramos in the head. Children were immediately taken to a local community center about a mile from the school.

After hearing this shocking news, almost in tears, President Biden talked about how parents would never get to see their children who have been shot dead again on Tuesday.

In his speech, he said, “As a nation, we have to ask ourselves: When in God’s name are we going to stand up to the gun lobby? When in God’s name will we do what we all know in our gut needs to be done?”

“I am sick and tired of it. We have to act,” Biden said. “And don’t tell me we can’t have an impact on this carnage,” the president added. During his term as a U.S. senator, Biden was successful in banning assault weapons. Following the ban, the mass shooting cases dropped but rose again after the ban was lifted.

“These kinds of shootings rarely happen anywhere else in the world,” even though other countries have citizens with mental illness or in homes with domestic abuse.

“Where in God’s name is our backbone, to have the courage to deal with it and stand up to the lobbies?” Biden said. “It’s time to turn this pain into action.”
