The card Counter, Paul Schrader’s highly anticipated new film, debuted a new trailer today. This revenge thriller starring Oscar Isaac and Tiffany Haddish tells the story of an ex-military interrogator turned gambler who mentors a young guy (Tye Sheridan) seeking vengeance against a mutual enemy. Willem Dafoe also appears in the film.
“There is a weight a man can ecru, the weight created by his past actions,” Isaac’s Tell can be heard saying in voiceover as the teaser opens. “It is a weight that can never be removed.”
It turns out the two have a convoluted past together and Tell finds it more difficult than he expected to prevent his former cellmate from doing something he’ll regret – or worse, something that could land him back in jail.
“Nothing can justify what we did,” the character adds later in the video through teary eyes.
Martin Scorsese is an executive producer on “The Card Counter,” and he helped shape the film in the post-production. Last year, during the pandemic, Schrader showed an early edit of the film to a group that included Scorsese. “I asked them all, ‘I have four more scenes to shoot. I can rewrite them. What am I missing? What do I need to add? How should I write these four scenes?’ I was able to rewrite these scenes and make these relationships much better. And not all productions get to do that.
Following its premiere at the Venice Film Festival, The Card Counter will be released on September 10th. After that, Isaac will act with Marvel’s Josh Brolin and Dave Bautista, Mission: Impossible’s Rebecca Ferguson, Spider-Zendaya, Man’s and Timothée Chalamet in Denis Villeneuve’s star-studded sci-fi Dune.
