Spontaneous Combustion The Subject Of Romance Comedy “Spontaneous”

The first spontaneous combustion is of senior student Katelyn Ogden. Are the rest of the students of Covington High next? The film Spontaneous covers this gory comedic absurdity based on the same-name book. Spraying all over her classmates, school is immediately dismissed, police interviews given, and the students isolated in sweatsuits. The main character Mara gives voice-over to this fascinating concept from the start. 

Characters continue popping off like zits but the interesting focus of the film is the romance and comedy at the forefront. Watch romance bud between Mara and fellow student Dylan after he spontaneously confesses feelings for Mara over text the first night shown, inspired to live in the moment and not have any regrets after Katelyn’s death. It comes across as super genuine and touching as you also witness the clever banter and vulnerable backstories. 

How far will the so-called Covington curse go? What is causing this and why is it only happening to the senior class students? Wondering if they’ll make it to graduation as the death count rises, the close connections and reappreciation for life and love grow in the community, between the classmates, and specifically for Mara and Dylan. Beyond the stellar action scenes, tensions, and well-told emotional toils, the film yields the nice message of letting go of some fears and inhibitions which can get in the way of your potential and happiness. It’s also interesting to see all of the responses to this unfounded situation; from the community, doctors, and politicians.
