After much discussion about Knuckles’ involvement in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, we finally have confirmation that the red echidna will appear in the upcoming film, as well as who will be voicing him, and it will be Idris Elba.
Elba hinted at his role in the Sonic sequel by posting a photo of Knuckles’ trademark spiked glove with a text referring to the character’s oft-memed Sonic Adventure theme. The news has yet to be formally released, but it appears to be only a matter of time.

In the videogame, Knuckles is a red Echidna who serves as the protector of Master Emerald. He’s also known for being a fighter and a hothead. Elba joins James Marsden, Ben Schwartz, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Adam Pally, Shemar Moore, and Jim Carrey, who were previously announced.
After creating a pre-pandemic smash for Paramount with the first 2020 film, which grossed close to $320 million worldwide, Jeff Fowler is returning to direct the sequel. Pat Casey, Josh Miller, and John Whittington are penning a screenplay based on a narrative written by Casey and Miller and based on a SEGA video game. Produced by Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher, Toru Nakahara, and Hitoshi Okuno. EPs are Haruki Satomi, Yukio Sugino, Shuji Utsumi, Nan Morales and Tim Miller.
Elba has been nominated for five Emmy Awards and won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Miniseries for Luther in 2012. Netflix’s The Harder They Fall and Concrete Cowboy, as well as Universal/Will Packer’s Beast and George Miller’s Three Thousand Years of Longing, are among his recent works.
