Rihanna nearly had a role in Annette, to play herself and have a duet with a puppet, in the new musical drama starring Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard.
Annette’s director, Leos Carax, said in an interview with USA Today that Rihanna was scheduled to start with the puppet during the film.
It was a small part written specifically for her, “Carax told USA TODAY of the planned cameo. “She was supposed to play Rihanna. When Baby Annette became famous, there was a duet between the puppet and Rihanna. But then Rihanna feels upstaged by this baby. “
There had been numerous rumors regarding the singer and her involvement in the film, but her representative later stated that she was no longer a part of it. Rather than trying to substitute Rihanna with another pop diva, the French director decided to delete the segment entirely.
The musical film follows a stand-up comedian (Driver) who falls in love with a famous opera singer (Marion Cotillard) and has a child, Annette, who is played by a puppet until the final scene when Devyn McDowell takes over the role and performs a song alongside Driver.
Annette, the musical film, will hit theaters on Friday. It premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year when Carax won the best director and will be available for streaming on Amazon later this month.
Recently, Rihanna has become the world’s wealthiest female artist with a net worth estimated to be $1.7 billion.
