RE4 VR Won’t Come with Unlockable Modes

If you’re looking to play as HUNK or Albert Wesker in Resident Evil 4 (RE4) VR, then you’ll be in for a disappointment.

A Facebook spokesperson said that the much-awaited Oculus Quest 2 port for RE4 doesn’t include unlockable content, including Mercenaries Mode and Separate Ways, per IGN.

The spokesperson did not explain why these modes, which are unlockable after completing RE4 once, were cut from the game’s final release.

Long-time players of Capcom’s fourth instalment would fondly remember playing as HUNK or unlockable character, Albert Wesker, in Mercenaries mode, an arcade-style minigame wherein you have to score as many points as you can before time runs out. RE4 protagonist, Leon S. Kennedy, and his love interest, Ada Wong, are also playable in this mode.

In addition to Mercenaries Mode, the original RE4 offers two other modes for the players to enjoy. The first one is Separate Ways which allows players to play as Ada Wong. The players can play through the entire main game in her perspective. The second one is Assignment Ada which allows players to play as Ada Wong once again as she collects samples of plaga for her employer, Albert Wesker. However, this mode is non-canon to the events of the game.

RE4 VR was announced in late September 2021 and set to be exclusively released on the Oculus Quest 2. The game will feature the same narrative and world design as the original 2005 release. It is also reformatted to the first-person perspective, while cutscenes remain in the original third-person perspective.

Gameplay elements are also reworked to fit the new VR scheme better. To use the knife, players will have to make a slashing motion with the Oculus Quest 2’s controller. Besides, quick-time events, while being most untouched, are somewhat changed. For instance, instead of pushing a button, players will have to move their controllers to get through a quick-time event quickly.

RE4 VR will be launched exclusively on the Oculus Quest 2 on 21 October 2021.
