Phasmophobia’s Halloween Update: Nightmare

Popular indie horror game Phasmophobia is back with a new update, just in time for Halloween. On October 23, Kinetic Games, developers of Phasmophobia, teased fans in this tweet about a new update dropping for Halloween. The new update is called Nightmare, and it seems that the name itself is a good description of what’s to come.

On October 25, the update was released, with all the details available in the news page here. However, we’ll still give you a quick run through of what you can expect in this update.

So what’s in the update?

To kick things off, they introduced a new map called the Maple Lodge Campsite. A few smaller areas make up the whole map, giving you an experience different from the maps currently available.

The map is medium-sized, featuring multiple tents, a log cabin and outdoor toilets. It also comes with more unique objects, higher object density, more visual detail and a new mini-map design at the truck.

The update also features a new difficulty rework, essentially fleshing out each difficulty, making every difficulty jump more pronounced. In Amateur, you get more forgiving gameplay with longer setup time and hunt grace period, shorter hunt durations and you only lose half of your items if you die.

Intermediate difficulty provides a good middle ground, with average setup time, hunt grace period and hunt duration. However, what makes it a bit harder is that the fuse box starts out turned off and there are fewer places to hide.

Professional difficulty is now more challenging. Now ghosts have the chance to change their preferred ghost room. There will also be more aggressive hunts and no setup time.

This update also introduces Nightmare difficulty, which aims to challenge even the best ghost hunters. Ghosts will only reveal one type of evidence, and overall the hunts will be more aggressive. Staying in the truck will also do you no good, as the sanity and ghost activity monitors will start off busted.

The game also has weather effects now, which adds a new layer of gameplay by affecting the way you look for clues. The Ouija Board also has some tweaks to its mechanics, making it less risky to use.

There are also 4 new ghost types, which will be spawning at an increased rate for the duration of the Halloween event. These new ghosts are the Onryo, The Twins, Obake and Raiju. They’ve also tweaked certain mechanics related to how your items interact with the ghosts.
