Nintendo stated on the blog post that the company will close Nintendo eShop on Nintendo Wii U and 3DS. By late March 2023, eShop will be completely shut off for both consoles, making it impossible to access the digital store. The closure will be held step-by-step. Here is the timeline of the closure:
- May 23, 2022: Use of credit card to add funds to an account will be impossible in Nintendo eShop on Wii U and 3DS.
- August 29, 2022: Nintendo eShop Card will be unable to add funds to an account in Nintendo eShop on either Wii U or 3DS. But redeem of download codes still possible to do on that date till late March 2023, at the time of the closure
The closure might affect the games that require transaction with Nintendo eShop. By this closure, any kind of purchases that involve Nintendo eShop on Wii U and 3DS will be impossible to do. After the closure, the balance still can only be used for digital purchase on Nintendo Switch.
The company stated that after the closure on late March 2023, redownloading games and DLC will be made possible.
The same step was previously planned by PlayStation by shutting down digital stores for PlayStation 3, PS Vita, and PSP. However, the plan was partially aborted due to the fans’ protests. As the result, PlayStation 3 and PS Vita digital stores are still open, leaving behind the PSP. Thanking the fans, Nintendo provides a website for looking back at the players’ stats with Nintendo Wii U and 3DS that can be accessed here.
