New Zealand presents Police Mockumentary Comedy with “Wellington Paranormal”

For the Wellington police department, it’s tongue-in-cheek from the start. From the first episode of the series, Wellington Paranormal, you can expect something weird and possibly unexplained. This is a must-see for fans of the series What We Do In The Shadows. You will not be disappointed though, as you will be bearing witness to an answered call downtown by main police officers O’Leary and Minogue.

For a while, the two are confronted by a young woman projectile vomiting before abruptly revealing herself to be more than just another partygoer, but far less human. When taken back to the station and detained, Sargeant Maaka takes O’Leary and Minogue down the hall to a secret locked room said to be for paranormal investigations. This cements that these sorts of unusual happenings have been occurring pretty regularly in the area. 

In the department, there is some fantastic and unusual tongue-in-cheek comic interaction between superiors, partners (particularly O’Leary and Minogue), and the citizens they encounter during their investigations. There’s also some excellent police humour throughout, which distinguishes the entire New Zealand mockumentary series as a paranormal police comedy. A demon girl scaling the walls and fleeing to inhabit various family members, cows in trees, and predatory plant aliens are among the unusual activities.

Aside from their sergeant, who serves as backup, these two department officers are suddenly charged with being the only officers tasked with investigating and dealing with the community’s peculiar paranormal occurrences. Who do you call when there’s a noise complaint about a house that hasn’t been occupied in 40 years or a ghost that needs to be cuffed? Minogue and O’Leary!
