Originally, published in 1965, the science fiction novel Dune has received its second film adaptation, and critics are already praising it over the first one made by David Lynch.
Dune is a two-part novel following Paul Atreides, a messianic heir, as he and his family fight off the Harkonnen, a group trying to control their world’s most precious resource to obtain space travel.
The first difference to notice is the directors. Unlike David Lynch, Denis Villeneuve put care into making the story digestible and well-adapted. Villeneuve structured the story to end on a cliffhanger where the middle of the book would be. That way, the entire story wouldn’t be crammed into one movie. Now, fans can be excited for a potential part two.
The second difference would be the cast. “(Timothee) Chalamet captures Paul’s gradual awakening, and there’s a clarity to the warring factions, geopolitics, and betrayals that the earlier movie generally lacked,” said Brian Lowry from CNN entertainment. Not only Timothee, but everyone else like Zendaya and Jason Mamoa are receiving praise.
The final difference is the special effects. The first Dune was revolutionary for its time, but the new version has even won out in that aspect, as well. The world’s machinery and technology seem to fit into the world well.
