Natural Remedies For White Teeth

Try these Natural Methods To Get White Teeth

It is often said that the secret of a beautiful smile is a nice set of white teeth. However, it is quite hard to maintain the whiteness of the teeth. Sometimes, certain foods stain the outer layer of the teeth(the enamel), leaving them with a pale yellow colour. Other times, plaque accumulate on the teeth and cause them to change colour.

The teeth can also become yellow when the enamel erodes to reveal the dentine underneath. Dentine is a yellow, bony tissue that lies under the enamel. Usually, yellow teeth can be remedied with regular brushing of the teeth, but this doesn’t work in this case and for tough stains.

The following are ways to naturally whiten the teeth.

Brush with a mixture of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide: Baking soda is a mild abrasive, that is said to have whitening properties. Hydrogen peroxide on the other hand is a bleaching agent with the ability to kill bacteria. The two are usually found in most toothpaste due to their cleansing abilities. A mixture of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide will help a great deal in whitening the teeth.

Studies have shown that brushing with a toothpaste containing 1% hydrogen peroxide and baking soda led to significantly whiter teeth. Just make a paste with one tablespoon of baking soda, and one tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide, and use it to brush your teeth. You can also use hydrogen peroxide as a mouthwash before brushing your teeth. Careful though, hydrogen peroxide can cause gum irritation and tooth sensitivity if overused.

Strawberry Remedy: This is very popular among celebrities. According to them, a mixture of strawberries, and baking soda works well for teeth whitening. However, this method has not been backed by science.

Oil Pulling: This is the swishing of oil around in the mouth. This method is quite simple and safe too. Just put coconut oil in your mouth, then pull and push the oil through your teeth. Coconut oil is said to contain lauric acid, which kills bacteria and prevents inflammation. Although it is not scientifically proven, it is an Indian traditional method proven to remove plaque, which makes the teeth yellow.

Have a calcium rich diet: Calcium is an important component for strong teeth and bones. It’ll strengthen the enamel and prevent eroding, which will allow the teeth to retain a shiny white colour. Foods such as milk and cheese are rich in calcium, to help protect the enamel.

Limit your sugar intake: sugar promote the growth of bacteria and plaque. So if you want white teeth, endeavour to limit your sugar intake. Limit your intake of staining foods such as coffee, red wine and dark berries too.

Never underestimate the power of brushing and flossing regularly. It is advisable to brush twice daily and after meals.
