Many Saints of Newark and its many references.
The Many Saints of Newark is already starting airing on HBO MAX since October 1st this year. And for many for those who following the life of Anthony Soprano, know a lot more than meets the eye when this movie came to the silver screen.
Here are some of the references made by David Chase in the movie that’s already been foretold in the series:
In the movie scene where Uncle Junior was fall from the church stairs due to heavy rain, resulting him to had a back problem throughout his life. As he fell, he screams a certain sentence which is, “Your Sister’s a C**t!”. A direct call back to when Uncle Junior swearing in the bathtub, due to his back problem.
The scene where Johnny’s homecoming, where Dickie Moltisanti first time ever introduced Christopher to the family. Whenever Christopher is being greeted by a younger version of Anthony, he instantly cries. In the scene, one of the relatives said to Anthony that babies know more than we realize. Hinting towards his Death and a callback to the series where Anthony is the one that responsible for his penultimate death.
When young Anthony makes a brief stop at the diner Holsten’s where he was supposedly met with Dickie towards the end of the movie. [spoilers alert] Dickie died the night before from getting assassinated by an unknown assailant. And this is also a direct callback towards the series finale hinting at a theory that final moments in the Sopranos were met with the same fate as Dickie, as the screen cut to-.
“So what? No f**kin’ ziti now?”. No more questions or references are much more present and clearer than this. Baked ziti that’s so legendary from the series is made itself to become a character in its own rights.
So many references so little time, but luckily the one of many that are being waited for by the fans is finally delivered. In the series itself, Tony many times mentioned wanting to become a professional Athlete since High School. But always being dismissed by the families alike, like what Junior said in the series. Acting as a direct callback, Uncle Junior said the same thing in the movie.
Stream Many Saints of Newark exclusively on HBO MAX, starts airing on October 1st.
