On May 31, Liam Payne woke up and chose violence over his feelings for former One Direction bandmates Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik.
On Logan Paul’s podcast Impaulsive, the former prominent boyband member revealed unique insights about a variety of issues, including why One Direction broke up, his feelings towards his ex-girlfriend Cheryl, and his battle with Justin Bieber. His thoughts on Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, and why One Direction was created, however, were by far the most controversial subjects.
Payne leaked decade-old information about the five-member group, erroneously claiming that he is the most successful soloist and fans of the band quickly dragged him on Twitter with some cold hard truths. A fast Google search debunks claims that he is the band’s most successful member.
‘Strip That Down’ his 2017 breakthrough single with Quavo, has been streamed over 800 million times on Spotify, but it hasn’t sold a billion records as Payne claimed to Paul. He also claims to have “outsold everyone in the band,” despite the fact that he has yet to sell out Wembley Stadium like Harry Styles or have a No. 1 on the Billboard 200 like Zayn Malik and Niall Horan.
In the interview, Liam said there are “many reasons” why he dislikes former bandmate Zayn Malik, but also “many reasons” why he’ll “always, always” be on his side. “If I had had to go through what he went through… through his growth and whatever else… my parents are overly supportive to the point where it’s annoying at times… and Zayn had a different upbringing in that sense”.
“You can always look at the man for where he is and say, ‘oh yeah, whatever that guy’s a dick, right?’ But at the end of the day once you understand what he’s been through to get to that point and also whether or not he actually wanted to be there… I can’t sit here and dick on him because of whatever and listen, I don’t agree with any of his actions. I can’t commend some of the things that he’s done. I can’t be on his side for that.” Liam furthermore said about his former bandmate Zayn.
Liam later tried to redeem himself after he saw the backlash he was receiving by tweeting “Guys – I wouldn’t normally comment on this stuff but when it’s your family it’s hard to let it slide. They mentioned a specific incident involving Zayn which I responded to – but listening back maybe I didn’t articulate myself as well as I could have. I was saying that there will always be things we disagree on but that I will always, always be on his side. That’s family. Zayn is my brother and I will stand by him forever”.
However, many fans are still disappointed and angry at Liam for his comments about the band members.
