LAPD Were Ready to Arrest Will Smith, Oscars Producer Says

Los Angeles police offered the arrest but did not take any action after the slap because Chris Rock declined to press charges.

LOS ANGELES, USA – Los Angeles police were on the scene and ready to arrest actor Will Smith for slapping presenter Chris Rock at the Academy Awards on Sunday, March 27, per the Hollywood ceremony’s producer on Thursday, March 31.

As Rock declined to press charges, the authorities took no action, according to producer Will Packer, who echoed what a police spokesperson told on Sunday.

Packer said in excerpts from an interview that will air Friday on ABC’s Good Morning America, “They were saying, you know, this is battery, was a word they used in that moment.”

“They said, we will go get him. We are prepared. We’re prepared to get him right now,” Packer added.

Shocks, sighs, and surprises abound at this year’s Oscars, but all anyone will care about is the shocking altercation between Will Smith and Chris Rock sparked by a joke about Smith’s wife Jada. During the live Oscars telecast, Smith strode up to the stage, appeared to hit Rock in the face, and then yelled at him not to mention his wife again.

It definitely overshadowed the rest of the night, particularly Smith’s Best Actor Oscar win for King Richard, which came just minutes later. Smith apologized to the Academy and called himself “a vessel of love” through tears.

In a statement released on Monday, Smith apologized to Rock, producers, and viewers, claiming he had “reacted emotionally.”

Rock made a reference to the 1997 film G.I. Jane in his joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. Demi Moore shaved her head for the film, Jane. It’s unclear whether Rock was aware that Jada Pinkett Smith suffers from a hair-loss condition.

The person involved in the incident declined to seek charges, according to a police spokesman, although he did not disclose information about the contacts at the awards show.
