On Thursday, August 4, pop sensation and actress Lady Gaga seemingly confirmed her involvement in the upcoming remake of the Oscar-winning psychological thriller Joker by sharing a musical teaser on Twitter.
The names Phoenix and Gaga flash on the screen as the musical clip shows silhouettes dancing together to the tune of Irving Berlin’s 1935 song “Cheek to Cheek,” which was composed for the Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers film Top Hat.
Joker: Folie a Deux, which Joaquin Phoenix will play the film’s title character once more, is scheduled to hit theaters on October 4, 2024.
Phoenix had previously played the character in the 2019 movie Joker, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor. The movie told the origin tale of Batman’s archenemy in DC Comics.
Warner Bros. has not yet released any other information about the sequel. The new production, however, will reportedly be a musical, and Lady Gaga is set to play Harley Quinn, the Joker’s accomplice, according to Hollywood trade publication Variety.
If confirmed, Lady Gaga will be the newest in a long line of actresses who have played or voiced the iconic character of Harley Quinn. Most recently, Margot Robbie played the role of the ‘Crime Queen of Gotham City’ in the 2020 film Birds of Prey and in The Suicide Squad the following year.
Robbie’s future in the role of Harley Quinn is uncertain. However, because the Joker films starring Phoenix are set in a different cinematic universe, Robbie can probably still play the legendary villain in any upcoming films.
A uncommon mental illness called folie à deux, often known as shared insanity, may be alluding to the long-standing co-dependency between Harley Quinn and the Joker.
