Jember Earthquake, is There Potential for a Tsunami?

Thursday, December 16, 2021, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1. The earthquake, which occurred at 06:01:33 WIB, was centered 42 km southwest of Jember, East Java. The earthquake, which was located at coordinates 8.55 South Latitude and 113.49 East Longitude, had a depth of 10 km.

Earthquake Affected Area

The earthquake was felt on the MMI III scale in Denpasar, Kuta, Legian, and parts of Banyuwangi. Some other Banyuwangi areas also felt an earthquake with an MMI II scale. Meanwhile, the earthquake was felt on the MMI II scale in Jimbaran, Puger, Karangkates, Lumajang, and Bondowoso. The earthquake was felt on the MMI I scale in parts of Lumajang and Bondowoso.

Tsunami Potential

The earthquake that occurred was a type of earthquake in the plate that was triggered by active fault activity on the seabed. The results of the analysis of the source mechanism show that the earthquake has an upward fault movement. However, the modeling results show that this earthquake has no tsunami potential. BMKG also said that aftershocks had also occurred on the same day at 06.18 WIB. Until now, the impact of the damage caused by the earthquake is still being assessed. However, several houses were reported damaged by the earthquake. Some even collapsed.

However, over the last few days, the Indonesian BMKG has recorded that there have been 20 earthquakes in various parts of Indonesia. On the 14th of this month, it was reported that nine earthquakes with the largest magnitudes of 7.5 on the Richter Scale and 7.4 on the Richter Scale occurred in East Nusa Tenggara. Earthquakes are vibrations or shocks that occur on the earth’s surface due to the sudden release of energy from below the surface that creates seismic waves. Earthquakes are usually caused by the movement of the earth’s crust or plates. In addition, earthquakes can also be caused by volcanic eruptions.

Earthquake Impact

The effects of an earthquake include:

1. Physical impact: Many buildings were destroyed or collapsed. Landslide due to shaking.

The loss of life. The ground surface becomes glued, cracked and the road becomes broken. Floods due to damaged embankments. Seabed earthquakes can cause tsunamis, etc.

2. Social impact: Causes poverty. Starving. Cause disease. If on a large scale (can cause a large tsunami), it can paralyze politics, the economic system, etc.
