Got nothing to watch? If you are up to watch a gritty, slow burn, and mind-bending horror movie then this movie is for you. Just a little warning, it will also contain a lot of gore.
Midsommar is a 2019 psychological horror drama directed by Ari Aster. With 2017’s Hereditary, Ari Aster established his reputation as one of the most surreal, insane, and creative horror filmmakers in the 21st century.
Those of you who are brave enough to see Aster’s first film will know that he doesn’t hold back when it comes to tone, tension, or gore. So, with a few Midsommar spoilers, we’re here to assist you to determine if you’re up to the challenge. If you can get through them, you should be able to get through the two-and-a-half-hour runtime.
Dani has been dealing with a devastating blow when she loses both her sister and her parents on the same tragic night. Christian, her boyfriend, had been planning to break up with her, but now he doesn’t have the heart to do it. So he invites her to join him on a trip to Sweden that he’s planning with his friends Josh and Mark; their other buddy, Pelle, has invited them to a once-in-a-90-year event. The festival appears to be enchanting — until the Americans are horrified by a bizarre ritual. People begin to vanish, and weird concoctions are offered. Dani’s fate becomes entangled with the unsettling celebrations as the festival approaches its conclusion.
This is a subjective question, but Midsommar is objectively rather frightening in my perspective. On a broad thematic level, the film is more of an atmospheric piece that gradually builds up the suspense to an almost intolerable degree, as opposed to the jump scare-filled spooky blockbusters that have been flooding theaters recently.
When it comes to scenes that may be difficult to watch, one of the most blatantly terrifying moments occurs early on, when Aster previews the story’s triggering act, which directly depicts the aftermath of the primary protagonist’s family’s murder/suicide.
Midsommar is an extraordinarily ingenious, creative, and cerebral horror film that clearly hinges on your stomach for this type of stuff. So, if you’re thinking about watching and believe you’ll be able to endure the disturbing atmosphere and graphic violence, the payoff may be well worth it. As for the people who are gonna be traumatized by these kinds of films, I think that you should sit this one out.
