Gacha games has been a popular trend especially in mobile gaming. Sometimes you get attracted to a game based on the aesthetic or even it being based on a well loved anime series. This is a method of reeling you in especially if you are new to the genre.

What is Gacha?

So it’s time to talk about what a Gacha game really is. Definition of Gacha: a mechanic put in games that give the option for players to spend money on loot, packs, or boxes for items, characters, cosmetics, etc. These are often found in free to play games (trending in mobile games).

The Good

Technically you are participating in gambling when you play a Gacha game. These games are easier to access, and can be played at your own pace. It teaches you time management in game (usually has an action-progression limit mechanic to incentivize more spending).

It also teaches you self control on your spending too. You have to be very patient, and be okay that your Gacha game isn’t the only game you are playing.

Most games also publish their rates, so you should have an idea on the probability of what you will get anyway. If you plan well, you might not even have to use your money — most games can let you grind their in game currency another way.

The Bad and the Ugly

These games are often a bit predatory. The company that makes these games want you to spend out of your pocket. You can easily dip several hundred dollars in one sitting if you aren’t careful.

The marketing for these games are strong, and it is easy to just give in to the gambling addiction/not even realize how much you actually spent altogether.

Gacha games can be a lot of fun. There are some fun ones out there that put time into a good story, provide good lore and even have addictive gameplay. Just be responsible with your gaming, and know what you get into before picking one up blindly.
