Five Simple Ways to Improve Your Mental Health

According to a study carried out by the World Health Organisation, the 2020 pandemic saw the number of people being diagnosed with some form of Mental Health disorder increase by 25%. Services are struggling to meet demand, and there are long waitlists before professional therapy and treatment are accessible.

Another barrier is the stigma mental health still has attached to it. People are afraid to ask for help or simply feel it is a waste of time. A common misconception is that you need to have a diagnosed mental health issue to work on your mental health. On the contrary, it is more important to maintain mental health by looking after yourself.

Below are five simple ways that you can use to maintain or improve your mental health at home:

1) Benefit from the soothing scents of aromatherapy –

A holistic approach that is growing in popularity, aromatherapy has long been an art form used to aid mental health. Scents are available to buy in forms such as essential oils, scented candles, and DIY kits where you can create your blend. Useful scents include lavender, chamomile, sandalwood, peppermint, and ylang ylang.

2) Get out and about exploring using apps –

Exercise is a standard recommendation by healthcare professionals to boost your mood, yet many people struggle to find the motivation to do so. Using AR/exploration apps such as Geocaching, Dibs, Pokemon Go, and Harry Potter: Wizards Unite can turn a simple walk into an adventure. Some apps even come with prizes!

3) Brighten someone else’s day –

Sometimes, the best way to cheer yourself up is to do something for someone else. It doesn’t have to be a grand gesture. It can be something as simple as doing a chore that is usually assigned to them, giving them a small gift, paying them a compliment, or paying for a coffee or bus fare for a stranger. Making someone else smile can make you smile too.

4) Tend to your inner child –

A great way to relieve stress and distract from negative thoughts is to do soothing activities typically done during childhood such as coloring or playing a game. There are many coloring books on the market now that are targeted specifically at adults and mental health. Also, video games such as Animal Crossing have become popular with people of all ages.

5) Treat yourself to a self-care day –

Everyone has their own definition of what constitutes self-care. For some, self-care is having a relaxing bubble bath with candles and a book. For others, it is finally getting to buy something that they have saved up for. Whatever your version is, allow yourself some time to put yourself first – rest, relax and recharge.
