Filipino Restaurant Kasama In Chicago Grants First Michelin Star

MANILA, Philippines – What a fantastic feat! Kasama, a Filipino restaurant in Chicago, has just been awarded a Michelin star for its chefs’ “creative, contemporary spin” on traditional Filipino cuisine.

Genie Kwon and Tim Flores, husband, and wife, operate the Michelin-starred bakery, café, and modern Filipino fine dining gem known for its dinner tasting menu. The Michelin Guide for 2022 praised it for “emphatically displaying the talented team’s training, expertise, and heritage for an ambitious, intelligent, and distinct experience.”


Kasama, a neighborhood pub in East Ukrainian Village, shared the announcement on Instagram on Thursday, April 7, praising its “wonderful patrons” and everyone on its team, past and present.

“It is still hard to believe what this industry has been through since the beginning of 2020. To make it here and to be recognized by the @michelinguide is truly beyond anything we could have ever imagined. Cheers to you all! ” Kasama wrote.


Flores and Kwon, both previous members of the Oriole kitchen, were praised by Michelin Guide for “branching out on their own with this restaurant,” which has evolved to represent the couple’s “true vision” for Kasama.


They featured a handful of Kasama’s recently developed dishes, including maitake mushroom adobo with mussel emulsion; pancit with thin squid ink noodles, scallop conserva, and shaved Serrano ham and Chef Kwon’s refined version of the halo-halo with Asian pear granita and pandan ice cream.

Flores oversees Kasama’s modern Filipino fare, which includes “unpretentious and soul-warming” comfort food favorites like adobo, tocilog, and lumpia shanghai, as well as fusion dishes like a Chicago-style Italian hotdog sandwich topped with homemade longganisa and shaved pork adobo.

The black truffle croissant and ham-and-cheese croissant served with raclette and serrano ham shavings, are among the “delicate, inventive delicacies” made by resident pastry chef Kwon. Kwon has worked at Eleven Madison Park and Flour Bakery in the past.


Kasama has received numerous awards. In October of last year, the Filipino restaurant was named to The New York Times’ top 50 restaurants list for 2021, as well as Eater’s and Chicago Magazine’s Best New Restaurants lists for 2021.
