2021 Mnet Asian Music Awards is going to happen in around a week. The show will be held offline at the CJ ENM Content Studio in Paju and has on-site audiences for the first time in two years. Lee Hyori will host the 2021 MAMA.
Since November 16th, MAMA‘s organizer has been announcing the lineup of performers. They have announced 12 groups will perform, including rising groups of the 4th K-pop Generation. However, the current lineup has disappointed Korean netizens as popular groups such as BTS, TWICE, BLACKPINK aren’t on the lineup.
On December 2nd, an article in Naver reported that BTS probably not attending the 2021 MAMA due to the new implementation of quarantine regulation in South Korea after the country confirmed its first five cases of COVID-19 new variant, Omicron, on December 1st. Travelers from overseas who wish to enter South Korea are required for ten days quarantine regardless of their vaccine status.
BTS is currently in Los Angeles, California, for their schedule in the U.S. They attended and performed at the American Music Awards of 2021 on November 22nd. Then they held a four-day offline concert, Permission to Dance On Stage, at SoFi Stadium on November 28th-29th and December 1st-2nd. BTS’ last schedule in the U.S. is performance in iHeartRadio‘s Jingle Bell Tour on December 3rd. They are expected to return to South Korea after.
Due to the new regulation, BTS cannot attend the 2021 MAMA since they possibly will be in quarantine until December 13th, while the 2021 MAMA will happen on December 11th.
However, are they really unable to attend the show because of the new quarantine rule? The answer is no. On December 2nd, Mnet‘s side released a brief statement regarding the news. They stated BTS had already withdrawn from the show even before the new quarantine rule. Mnet also added that BTS couldn’t record a performance video due to their packed year-end schedule, and they will prepare a special video for ARMY instead.
