El Michels Affair: A Big Band with 60’s Inspired Funk and Soul

El Michels Affair, a sometimes-10-man band, is led by Leon Michels, a multi-instrumentalist with a penchant for joining prolific bands out there. His portfolio consists of acts such as Wu-Tang Clan, Freddie Gibbs & Madlib, Lee Field & The Expressions, and Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings.

From a saxophonist, Leon Michels blooms beautifully and becomes a successful multi-instrumentalist. He started El Michels Affair after leaving Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings. Inspired to create a wide range of sounds in his music, he even reimagined the legendary Enter the 36 Chambers. By 2010, Leon Michels released the Enter the 37th Chamber, a wordplay on the original album.

The soundscapes that he used and the inspiration that came along were magnificent! His work is a sight to behold when it is played via live instruments with good acoustic settings. El Michels Affair manages to make a universe of its own.

With the new release of Yeti Season, El Michels Affair teams up with a Hindi singer, Piya Malik, and The Shacks. Follow the story of the Yeti and a soundtrack of its tale in its entirety. The sound of this album is inspired by the likes of Turkish pop and progressive bands, with a harmonious Asian flavour in Piya Malik’s voice.

El Michels Affair also released selected works of beats from Wu-Tang Clan solo releases. It’s called Return to the 37th Chamber. Along with his cover and tribute album, El Michels Affair also released a tribute to Issac Hayes back in 2010 called Walk on By (A Tribute to Issac Hayes) in a format of EP.
