DC Animated Films: A Look at What’s Coming in 2022–2023

DC’s live-action library is a mixed bag, with no Batman or Superman in their Extended Universe. They’re not quite omittable characters, like a sitcom might write out a cast member after a publicly publicized error or run-in with the law. We have The Flash, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, and maybe a Wonder Woman threequel on the way, but the DCEU remains in doubt despite a pretty filled calendar. Despite several high-profile cameos, the Justice League appears to be in disarray. However, not all DC-related media is in turmoil.

Beyond the comics, DC animated films have been a saving grace. From early Kevin Conroy and Tim Daly stuff to The Dark Knight Returns and the latest Justice League series finishing with Apokolips War, DC’s direct-to-streaming/DVD repertoire almost makes up for its live-action counterparts’ failings. The releases in this phase known as the “Tomorrowverse” aren’t slowing down, with a complete slate of new animated DC movies slated to stream soon. Here’s a look at the animated adventures coming to your television in 2022 and 2023.

The Doom That Came to Gotham is based on a three-part miniseries published by DC Comics in 2000, and it explores gothic and Lovecraftian horror themes. It is part of the outstanding DC Elseworlds series, which features characters situated in different timelines and realms. Classics from Elseworlds include Batman: Gotham by Gaslight, Superman: Red Son, and Batman/Marvel crossovers with Daredevil and Spider-Man.
