It’s been 13 years since the MCU has started, and it doesn’t look like they’ll stop any time soon with movies spanning out into 2024.
Ever since the cinematic universe has started, many characters have joined. There are popular characters like Spider-Man to niche ones like Guardians of the Galaxy. With so many characters making appearances, fans have constantly talked and speculated which ones would join next, like a Smash Bros game. You may suspect that it’s just because they sold the characters off, but that’s not just it for the Netflix adaptations.
Yes, Marvel sold off characters like Daredevil, Punisher, and Spider-Man to other companies, but only Spider-Man made it onto the big screen. Other characters weren’t used, and Marvel eventually got the rights reverted to them.
However, a new book, The Story of Marvel Studios: The Making of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, revealed the split between Marvel Entertainment and Marvel Studios. Marvel Entertainment and Marvel Studios are entirely separate from each other. So, Marvel Entertainment didn’t want to give the returning characters to Marvel Studios.
“While many observers assumed that this entire stable of characters would go directly into Marvel Studios’ movie development process, it was decided by Marvel Entertainment’s higher-ups that because the movie side was already deeply committed to their successful Avengers characters, and the impending Guardians of the Galaxy characters, that the returnees would instead help build a planned TV empire under the direct control of Marvel Entertainment”.
Marvel Studios wanted the characters, but Entertainment wouldn’t let them.
“The film side had no control over those characters, despite their interest in developing them. Instead, they all went to Marvel Entertainment. Ghost Rider appeared in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, and the others were placed in different streaming series”.
Since then, Marvel Television went under, and Marvel Studios now has control over film and television. They are just waiting for the right time to use them.
