This means that almost all legal limitations on social contact will be removed.

But the prime minister said it was vital to proceed with caution and warned that the pandemic is not over.

The current wave peak is not expected until mid-August. It could result in between 1,000 and 2,000 hospitalizations per day, according to government scientists.

Central estimations from modelers advising the government also show that COVID deaths are predicted to be between 100 and 200 per day at the peak, though there is a great deal of uncertainty.

Earlier, the Health Secretary had told the House of Commons that cases could reach 100,000 a day later in the summer, but he didn’t think that would put unbearable pressure on the NHS.

The vaccines had created a wall of protection, which means that a summer wave survival is feasible, according to Sajid Javid.
