COVID-19: After Pandemic, What Does an Ordinary Filipino Youth Look Like?

More than a year ago, it was declared that the country will be placed under lockdown for a month. We were never the same after that. Roads were empty, streets were deserted, and a lot of space in between. The fascinating world we once knew is turning into a blank sheet.  This is the truth that we are all living with right now. The new normal!

The crazy moments we enjoy with our best mates after leaving the university. Bonding over street food or fine wines. The lovely cafe where we always go when we need some “me time”. The everyday commuting stress we must endure in order to be at class on time, and a variety of other activities. We’ve all been there. And, to be fair, many of us miss the hustle of city life.

Who would have guessed that the normal life we’ve become used to would recede in a blink of eye? Our school, daily activities, and social relationships have all been disrupted, and the changes are abrupt.

Isolation is the new norm. Masks and face shields are everywhere, curfews have been implemented to prevent people from staying out late at night. The brilliant lights that sparkled from every window and the bustling sights that brought the beauty of nightlife to life are all gone. Every day has the sense of a ghost town.

This is what a typical Filipino in the Philippines will look like once the COVID-19 pandemic is over.

The pandemic does not appear to go anytime soon. With all the changes that have taken place, one would assume that things could only get worst from here. But, there is always something positive to look forward to. These vaccines are on their way, allowing us to continue our “normal” lives. It’s uncertain when this will happen, but it could be soon.
