This year going into your freshman year of college could be both a mix of underwhelming and overwhelming. With the pandemic ruling out a lot of college introduction traditions, and also the opening of schools as the high waves of Covid-19 outbreaks start to recede and rise over and over again, it can be a little confusing to know where to go and what to do for your first year at university.
This article will provide you with the basic necessities that any college student should have going into college, whether you’re doing remote learning or going to class in person. 2021 should still be an exciting and memorable year for any college freshman to enjoy.
To start, there is the need to specialize your living environment, so whether that be your dorm or if you’re still stuck at home, don’t forget to dazzle up your room to make sure you’re not feeling too stuck in a tomb. Wall calendars, motivational posters, and fewer distractions will allow you to be able to keep your mind focused on your goals, whether that’s making sure you have a certain GPA or that you just make it through this semester alive.
Then there’s the school necessities, notebooks, binders, pencils and of course your laptops, tablets, Apple watches, cellphones, and headphones. There are different ways to make sure that your study habits fit your own schedule and style for learning, whether that’s Googling your math answers or trying to secretly binge-watch your favorite show during your remote learning class, technology is a must.
Then there’s the need for food and refreshments. While studying hard and trying to make it past a very high-stress year of controversial politics, environmental crises, midterms and finals, don’t forget to make sure that snacks are handy at all times. If it’s a granola bar shoved in your backpack or a bag of Takis that you’re hiding underneath your desk, don’t forget to make sure that you are nourished and ready to go after those A’s.
While it’s important to keep the basics at hand, don’t forget that one of the most important things that any freshman should have is a social life. During such a hard time in the middle of a pandemic, it can be difficult to find time for yourself to just release tension and make connections. However, there’s a lot of different ways to make friends and keep entertained. Zoom, Skype, Facetime, and Teams Meetings can let you connect virtually and with social media apps like TikTok, Instagram, and Twitter the ideas for remote fun are endless.
So during this year, don’t forget to stay focused, stay ready, and have fun. Come rain or shine or viruses, this year is for you so don’t forget to celebrate and make memories.
