The 2021 American Music Awards (AMAs), held on November 21st, 2021, was hosted by Cardi B in Microsoft Theatre, Los Angeles. After four years since their last attendance, BTS flew to LA to attend the 2021 AMAs in person, followed by their upcoming Permission to Dance On Stage concert in SoFi Stadium. BTS got nominated in three categories—Favourite Pop Duo/Group, Favourite Pop Song, and Artist of The Year—and won them all, making BTS ties with Megan Thee Stallion and Doja Cat as the most awarded artists in the 2021 AMAs.
The annual American Music Awards, first broadcasted in 1974, was created by Dick Clark in 1973 to compete with The Recording Academy Grammy Awards since the show moved its broadcast to CBS. In AMAs 2005 edition, both the nominations and the winners were chosen based on the sales and airplay. But since 2006, the winners are decided from the votes of fans and the public, collected through the AMAs website. The nominations are still based on sales and airplay and now include social media activity and video views. Since then, the AMAs has become the world’s largest fan-voted awards show.
BTS became the first Asian to win, not only one but two categories in AMAs. They are the first Asian act to win Favourite Pop Song, formerly Favourite Pop/Rock Single (1974-1995), with their second English single, Butter. They are also the first Asians to win the Artist of The Year category. Additionally, BTS won the Favourite Pop Duo/Group for three consecutive years since 2019. Congratulations to BTS!
