The many variations in the story depicting replicants of the Blade Runner universe is what we need for our love towards cyberpunk. Set in a dystopian future of Los Angeles, a girl has lost her memory and the only clue she has is that she’s a skilled killer with a black lotus tattoo.
The first summary of the synopsis makes us think of the old cyberpunk stories. Many stories, both eastern and western adaptations, start with female characters who have lost their memories. From Alita the Battle Angel to Ghost in A Shell, the possibilities are endless. With science fiction, the technology and environment are what drive the story.
With many intricacies of the newly sociopolitical landscape of its world, new flavors are added to the table. The dystopian settings, trans-humanism, and technological/ecological aspects of the world help to move the story forward.
Blade Runner: Black Lotus will take place in 2032, dealing with the aftermath of OVA Blade Runner 2022 created by Shin’ichirô Watanabe.
Its first trailer shows us the beautiful dystopian landscape of 2032 Los Angeles through the medium of Computer-generated imagery (CGI). The CGI’s animation reminds me of the early 2000s animation style such as Astro Boy (2009).
With Philip K. Dick’s pages and Ridley Scott’s vision, the universe expansion needs the breath of fresh air, regarding the lore, and the issues at hand.
Catch this show on both Adult Swim & Crunchyroll on November 13, for its first two episodes, starring all-star cast such as Brian Cox, Wes Bentley, Barkhad Abdi, and Jessica Henwick.
