Warner Brothers The industry has been shocked by Discovery’s most recent move to shelve the Batgirl movie. In addition to shocking and upsetting the project’s talent, the unprecedented choice has forced many individuals to react to the news in various ways over the past few days.
Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah have received backing from big personalities like James Gunn and Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige, among others. Additionally, it’s been said that Walter Hamada, president of DC Film, has almost left the company as a result of David Zaslav’s choice.
Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions is the most recent studio official to comment on the shocking news.
One of the people who suffered the effects of the most recent Warner Bros. and Discovery merger was Batgirl. Since March, the new leadership has implemented several strategic changes at the studio, including getting rid of the majority of scripted material and altering the hybrid release structure.
We’re not going to release a movie unless we believe in it, particularly with DC, said Zaslav on a recent WB earnings call, adding that the goal is to “guard the DC brand” and more crucially “to build the brand.” A movie won’t be released until it is ready.
In a recent interview with Variety, Blum said he understood the studio’s choice to axe the movie, which had already spent $90 million on production and was almost finished. I was astonished by that, but I could see why they decided to do it, he added. They want a fresh start and to brand DC in a particular way because you have new management.
