Inventing Anna, Netflix’s newest series which was released last February 11, is currently a trending topic in Indonesia. This drama tells the story of fake socialite, Anna Delvey, a woman who claims to be a Russian-born German socialite. Inventing Anna follows journalist Vivian Kent’s journey as a woman later found to be successful in defrauding banks, hotels and wealthy acquaintances for hundreds of thousands of dollars. This series is indeed inspired by this series, which was inspired by an in-depth feature article published by journalist Jessica Pressler in New York Magazine in 2019.
When the news first appeared in the media, the Anna Delvey case was indeed successful in capturing public attention. The fraud she did was considered phenomenal because it was able to deceive the super-rich community in the United States. Who is Anna Delvey in Inventing Anna? Anna Delvey is a pseudonym used by a German woman whose real name is Anna Sorokin. She moved to New York in 2013 and started her career as a self-styled socialite who succeeded in tricking people.
She pretended to be the heir to a wealthy German aristocrat to enter the social circle of the wealthy in the US. Her identity was revealed in 2017 when the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office began an investigation into him for bank fraud. In fact, the woman known as Anna Delvey actually came from a simple family. Her father worked as a truck driver, while her mother was a convenience store owner before becoming a housewife. Anna Delvey, alias Anna Sorokin was born in the city of Domodedovo, near Moscow, Russia in January 1991.
Her family then moved to Germany in 2007 when she was 16 years old. Anna Sorokin then moved to London in 2011 to study at Britain’s top art university, Central Saint Martins. But her studies stopped until she finally moved to Paris, France and began an internship at the fashion magazine Purple. In this fashion country, Anna Sorokin began to change her last name to Delvey.
Anna Delvey claims to be a high-class socialite from Europe
Anna Delvey started her career as a fake socialite in New York by establishing the Anna Delvey Foundation. Selling the idea, she tried to find a rich investor for her foundation. The foundation, she promised, would become a private member club and arts organization that would manage important buildings and events in the city.
Under this pretext, Anna Delvey began befriending a number of high-class socialites in Manhattan, New York. She then asked her friends to pay for the hotel, flight, and luxury food they enjoyed together. Of course he promised to pay back the bill soon but “forgot” to do it. After failing to find investors for her foundation, this Anna Delvey figure starts making fake bank statements. Her aim was to convince people that she had access to the 60 million Euros, or around Rp. 973 billion, held in Swiss bank accounts.
She used the document as a complete loan application, which then sparked the suspicion of a number of parties due to data discrepancies. No less shrewd, Anna then withdrew the document so that it could not be traced further.
Anna Delvey has also convincingly successfully checked into various luxury hotels without including a credit card. She briefly stayed at 11 Howard Hotels in SoHo with a total bill of 30,000 US dollars, equivalent to Rp. 427 million, which she then paid with a fake check. She was then kicked out and then moved to the Beekman Hotel, another luxury hotel in New York.
Again, she owed 11,518 US dollars, or around Rp. 164 million, so she was forced out of her hotel room. Anna Delvey then moved to the W New York Union Square hotel but only lasted two days, for the same reason. Shortly thereafter, her fraud was exposed until her finally had to face prosecution in court for the losses she caused.
