Anime Movie Review: Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop

The romantic anime movie ‘Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop’ is now streaming worldwide on Netflix. So, what are you waiting for? Grab some snacks and watch the film about a shy boy who expresses himself through haiku and a bubbly yet self-conscious girl. After meeting one bright sunny day, they eventually share a brief magical summer.

The story is cute. It actually made me giggle at the near end because it reminded me of a summer love I never had. The movie ‘Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop’ amazes me with its vibrant colors and semi-realistic actions of a real-life person in a real-world scenario, like what you can expect in other movies, like mature anime movies or some Studio Ghibli movies. The movie is overwhelming at first if it is your first-time watching anime with this kind of animation. However, as the story goes on, you will find yourself easily absorbing what the film is actually about.

The story is about a boy named Cherry and a girl named Smile. They meet each other one sunny morning in the mall, crash into each other, their phones are swapped accidentally (the phones are actually important in their lives) and the typical romantic story goes on. The main characters of the story represent people who are more comfortable expressing themselves online, which is true to this day. Even after the pandemic strike, people are more into online stuff, sharing their days, thoughts, and opinions. The movie depicts some real-world scenarios and is actually relatable.

But what about the movie that made it unique?

I daresay that the movie actually has a unique main character. A shy boy who likes haiku, and a bubbly girl who has bucked teeth and braces. The film actually highlights these characters’ love of haiku and the bucked teeth. You will hardly find any other anime that highlights a character’s bucked teeth and is actually a part of a romantic story.

I definitely recommend this romantic movie to have a break from the anime series with their unrealistic romantic fantasy. You should check out this movie and share your thoughts.
