Adele Says She Found Her True Self After Divorce

Adele, known for songs about heartbreak, will release her next album, 30, on November 19th. Apart from her popular single “Easy on Me“, the rest of the songs on the album reflect her personal journey including reinventing herself after the divorce.

In a newly published interview with The Rolling Stone, Adele said the breakup from her ex-husband, Simon Konecki, marked the end of her relationship with not only her ex-husband but also with her most alien version of herself.

Adele said that she wanted to feel calm and happy in married life, but she never felt that way. That’s what made her decide to separate.

“I really don’t know myself,” she said. “I don’t know if it’s because of Saturn‘s return or if it’s because I’m fine and really heading into my thirties, but I just don’t like who I am,” she said, as reported by Harper’s Bazaar, Thursday, November 11th, 2021.

The return of Saturn, which refers to a cycle in astrology of about 30 years, is said to reflect an important milestone in adulthood and marks a period of upheaval and struggle. For Adele, this struggle has led her to her upcoming album.

Adele said she was initially caught up in the external circumstances of the divorce, feeling she had somehow screwed it up.

“It made me very sad,” she recalls. “Then so many people I didn’t know found out that I didn’t make it… it really broke me. I was ashamed. Nothing to be ashamed of, but you feel like you didn’t do a good job.”

She also opened up about the emotional rollercoaster that defined her first few months of transition. “I thought, ‘This is going to be really up and down,'” she said.

Luckily she found the antidote, which was to keep her energy up and exercise.

“If I can change my strength and body like this, surely I can do it for my emotions and my brain and for my inner well-being,” the singer said. “That’s what drives me,” she said.

In May 2019, around her 31st birthday, she also had a eureka moment, where things started to turn positive.

“I remember going upstairs, and doing my facial routine, and getting into bed,” Adele says. “I feel so hopeful… It’s the first time I’ve had such a great night and I’m fine being home and sleeping alone. I’m not excited, but I’m looking forward to the next day.”
