Have you ever read some classical novels or stories that make you wonder if it real? The Adventure of Tom Sawyer, for example. If Tom Sawyer was created based on a true story or was it only a good analogy of life depicted by Mark Twain? Well, we can only guess until now. Or, make a good summary and explain it from another perspective for the story.
Classical novels or books that you may find in a public library or online book shop have made an impact in the literature world. I am also a fan of books or novels, especially the classic genre. Even it was a children’s story, but, still, the way the author wrote the story was amazing.
Well, there is one classical book that becomes a title for Netflix’s series which is Lupin. Lupin comes from a fictional character, Arsene Lupin that was created by Maurice Marie Emile Leblanc, in short, Maurice Leblanc. He was a French novelist and short stories writer. Arsene Lupin was viewed as a counterpart for Sherlock Holmes that was created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Lupin also already adapted to animation in Japan. Lupin in Netflix is a story about Assane Diop, which is played by Omar Sy that also played in Jurassic World and X-Men: Days of Future Past, a gentlemen gem thief seeking revenge for his father that was accused of wrong based on his claim. Throughout the series, Assane’s stories were slowly revealed through a flashback or action that is done by Assane or other characters. His inspiration was Maurice Leblanc’s book which was Arsene Lupin. This series already reached out to 70 million households and surpasses The Queen’s Gambit. This series is one of my favorites. I will give you 5 reasons why you should watch this series.
The first reason is the actor.
Omar Sy is the perfect cast to play as Assane Diop. He just doesn’t carry the show and grow accustomed to his role, but he is the show. Even Assane is a thief, he isn’t the bad guy and it’s impossible not to be hypnotized by his charm.
The second reason is diversity.
As we can see, some movies are played only by white people. But, equal treatment to all races should be in all fields, especially this field which is movies or entertainment. Netflix did great work for putting non-white faces in the series.
The third reason is ‘old-fashioned’.
Lupin is depicted not only to act cool but also to deliver a class that can be dissected together with family. This brought a James Bond vibe, and become a binge-watch for the series itself.
The fourth reason is Paris.
While in the pandemic, we can’t go anywhere freely due to the Covid-19. Lupin delivers Paris in every frame, so we are blessed by the appearances of some iconic landmarks in Paris, such as the Louvre, Le Puces, and even the Eiffel tower also make a cameo appearance in the series. It feels like we are taken on a virtual trip in the city by this series.
The final reason is the success of the class covered.
Lupin handles social class is absolutely brilliant. From the story, we know that Assane and his father came to Paris from Senegal to search for a better life. All of their experiences are related to many races and social classes during the series. It looks like hard-wired into their life. Assane is a master of disguise. He wants to disguise himself as a cleaner or driver, and this makes him drop under the privileged of Paris.
Well, these are 5 reasons from my perspective why you should watch Lupin in your leisure time. You may want to rewatch again into season 2. In the literature or movies world, we can find anything that sparks an interest within ourselves. This interest can lead to another interest that can broaden our perspectives to another field. And, also, you can find many interesting things by doing this and applying it in your future. Since, knowledge can be found even in the series, do not limit yourself to only watching one series.
